  • After landing in Portland on July 5, we immediately drove east along the Columbia River on I-84. We stopped at Bridal Veil and Latourell Falls, we tried to drive down the scenic byway instead, since it was a very pretty road. Unfortunately, everyone else in the state had the same idea since it was the Friday after 4th of July, and we quickly ended up stuck in traffic. We finally manged to turn around near Wahkeena Falls and just back tracked to the interstate instead.

  • Monotropa uniflora: Indian Pipe/ Ghost Plant.

This was the first thing I saw as we walked down the trail going to Bridal Veil Falls. It was a pure white flower with a white stem and white leaves. It feeds off of fungi, but is actually a plant without any chlorophyll.

  • At the town of Hood River, we decided to make our way to Dufur, OR by heading south on state road 35 towards Mt Hood. This road was lovely and had very little tourist traffic with many vineyards and orchards. We then then took a Forestry Service road east towards the little town of Dufur.

Early pre-dawn view of Mt Hood from Balch Hotel, Dufur, OR Still on Eastern time, I crawled out of bed and tried to take photos of Mt Hood out of our window. I love how blue and purple everything was just before sunrise.
